Mt. Sylvan friends and family,

As we have all seen in recent days, the needs in Haiti due to the earthquake are monumental. There are immediate needs for water, food, health, safety and housing and there will be long term needs for building hospitals, churches educational facilities and houses. To help meet these needs, the North Carolina Conference of the United Methodist Church has suggested a tentative plan for this disaster response. In addition to your monetary donations (write these checks to Mt. Sylvan, designated "Haiti Relief"), the Conference has asked six districts, including the Durham District, to help provide Personal Health Kits.

This coming Sunday, January 24, we are asking those who would like to participate to either bring supplies for Health Kits or to donate money designated for Haiti Health Kits. The items for the Health Kits will be brought forward during each service Sunday. After the Sunday School hour those who attended either the early or contemporary services are encouraged to meet in the Fellowship Hall to begin putting these kits together. Those who attend the 11:00 service are welcome to help join the effort after their service. We anticipate providing Health Kits will be an ongoing endeavor for approximately three months with other opportunities to build kits. Information below describes the Health Kits and how they are to be assembled. Please consider contributing any of the items for these kits as well as kits already assembled. Boxes will be located in the parlor and narthex in upcoming weeks.

Important Kit Assembly Information

* All items included in kits must be NEW items.
* All emergency kits are carefully planned to make them usable in the greatest number of situations. Since strict rules often govern product entry into international countries, it is important that kits contain only the requested items-nothing more.
* Do NOT include any personal notes, money or additional materials in the kits. These things must be painstakingly removed and will delay the shipment.
