Some years ago, I was asked to speak to a group of second grade students as a part of a career day. Having agreed to be a part of the day, it suddenly dawned on me that I was going to have to explain ministry to a group of 7 year olds whose only real contact with a pastor would at best be listening to a sermon that seems much too long for a second grade attention span. After much thought, I decided to take several of the photographs that cover the walls of my office. I shared with them a photo of a Bible study and the way the group grew together; I shared a photo of a baptism and the joy of the family; I shared a photo of a wedding and the couple committing to one another for life; I even shared a photo of a man in a hospital bed and talked about a peaceful death. I then shared with these eager young souls that “I have the chance to be with people during the most important moments of their life.” Truthfully, that is one of the greatest joys of my life: sharing those important moments as God touches the lives of individuals.
